Career Development for Student Athletes
Athlecs is a signicant part of your Smith experience. The skills you developed to become
a compeve athlete are likely to make you successful in other contexts. Employers
parcularly value non-industry specic skills that can be ulized across the elds
(transferable skills). Athlecs provides a context for you to voice your potenal, so consider
how you might discuss your transferable skills in the career development process.
Tips for athletes:
Meet with a Career Advisor around your athlec schedule
Aend the “Leveraging Athlec Experience in Your Job Search” workshop
Aend Employer Informaon Sessions (can’t make it due to pracce? Let us know!)
Student Athlete Transferable Skill List
Consider including these skills on your resume, in cover leers, and while interviewing.
Communicaon
You always communicate with your teammates and coaches to solve problems - your diplomac
skills will be just as necessary in any work environment.
Time Management
To balance a full class schedule with athlecs you must be extremely ecient, driven and able to
work on a ght schedule. Employers desire ecient people who are self disciplined and movated.
Self-Movaon
As a student athlete it is crucial to recognize your strengths and weaknesses so that you can work
eciently towards your ulmate goal. A self-movated employee increases the eciency of the
oce and improves the ulmate level of producvity. They will be the rst to seek opportunies.
Detail-Oriented
Being detail-oriented allows you to pick up on small cues that can make or break the game. As an
athlete you know that lile things you do in life aect the whole. In work environments, they need
people who can recognize small things that may inuence the success of a project.
Analycal/Strategy
Analycal thinking is key to understanding what aects your work’s outcome and execung your
strategy to advance your goal. You ulize this skill every me you think about your body posion
before the next move.
Goal Oriented
You work every day to overcome the next hurdle, like bench more or run an extra mile. Employers
need workers that will rise to the challenge and work hard unl they complete their task movang
others to do the same.
Ability to Take Cricism
As an athlete you improve based on the feedback. In any industry, you will need to accept crique to
improve and learn on your mistakes. Your reacon shows whether you are willing to grow.
